28 August

My first collecting day here, in Posdnyaki. I with my dad went there by a bus, and long searched for any fossils. Next a breakthrough - I saw a piece of sandstone and there was a whole Rugose coral - Grewingkia.

Two fossils, Grewingkia and a Tabulate coral.

Perhaps the most chilling question was - how did Paleozoic coralls get there? I studied a geography atlas where was a geological map of Ukraine, and there was shown that Kyiv is made up of Paleogene deposits. However I didn't tell you everything. These remains were unearthed in artificial sand inwashes, so perhaps the sediments were mixed up.

Next we saw some sand hills and ran towards them. There we walked long, and them dad spotted a tooth of a shark(Lamniforma). It was our first vertebrate fossil found here.

After it we found many mammal and bird bone bits. They all were small - no more than 2 cm.
